You take the child's hand and she begins to walk you through the field. You decide to break the silence with a question, uttering the first words since you woke up.
"Who are you?"
The child looks at you. Although her shadowy face is difficult to read, you sense that you've offended her in some way. Nonetheless, she answers.
"Jaimbu." She says at last, her voice hoarse and small.
In a desperate attempt to soothe yourself, you add some pep to your reply, smiling.
"Cool, I'm Jani!"
